Bach to Rock has been supporting the Connecting Through Music program at Neptune Beach Elementary since it began in 2016. We send thriving music teachers and our one-of-a-kind curriculum to the special needs wing to light up the lives of these special children.
The classes we bring to NBE are taught by our very own Leighton Serlo. Leighton is a vocalist, an early childhood teacher, and a mother of her own NBE students. Leighton has modified one of B2R’s early childhood programs (called Rock City) to cater specifically towards these kids. Each week, Leighton centers her class around a different instrument. Together they have played everything from hand bells and drums to full-sized guitars!
One of their favorite instruments is the rain stick. The first time Leighton brought the rain stick into class, she saw something incredible. Students who usually aren’t able participate at all suddenly were reaching for the rain stick. They were engaged and focused in the soothing sounds and unique art of the rain stick. This instrument resonated with them in a way that no other had. It truly lit up their lives.
The changes we have seen over the course of this program have been huge. Students are showing verbal growth and improvements in their coordination. They share with each other, they participate, and they learn. These kids face challenges most of us will never understand. Many are unable to communicate, but through this program we are able to connect these children through music.
